FLOODING IN NORDELPH
Nordelph has not flooded within living memory. To calm any apprehension you might have, take a trip a mile or so to the west and study the drop below Mullicourt Aqueduct, where Well Creek crosses over the Middle Level Main Drain. This whole area of the Fens would have to flood to this depth before waters lapped across High Street! Nevertheless, consulting the Environment Agency's flood risk maps brings chilling news ...

It seems unnecessary to provide the key to the map, which you can access (for any part of the UK) at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/flood. The Environment Agency also have a flood warning service which can alert you on the following scheme:
To get an A4 sized copy of this poster, together with details of the Floodline service, click on the image above. Floodline allows you to sign up for alerts by phone, text or email from:
www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/31624.aspx
or by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188
Since posting the above item in March 2010, Nordelph Parish Council received a letter from William P Smith of Outwell, expanding on the maps, and on the specific risk of Well Creek flooding. The letter may be downloaded, and the risk of Well Creek flooding examined in another flood-related page.
Welney Wash
While you may be relaxed about Well Creek flooding, the (controlled) flooding of the Ouse Washes, especially at the Wash Road between Welney and Littleport can be of concern to Nordelph residents. The siting of the warning sign on Silt Road, alerting you to the fact that the road is impassable, is less than ideal, coming where there is little opportunity to change direction for several hundreds of yards. There are at least three other ways to determine whether the Wash is flooded. You can access a recorded message on the same Floodline number 0845 988 1188; select option '1', and when prompted key the quick-dial number 03363. This system does not appear to cope with 'type ahead', so do wait to be prompted.
Or you can visit the Environment Agency website where the water levels at Welney are both recorded and plotted:

A link to this site is now provided from our Nordelph Present index.
Alternatively, the Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust site near Welney provides updates on the state of the Wash Road (during times when it might be expected to be at risk) on its website at:
