STOP PRESS
Parish Council Meeting:
Change to the date of the July meeting; instead of Monday July 25th, this will now be held on Wednesday 27th, 7.00pm in the Village Hall
The Open Gardens Day scheduled for June 26th in the village has been cancelled.
NORDELPH COMMUNITY WEBSITE
Well known village sign climber, and incidentally loyal servant of the village for 58 years as its parish clerk, Ron Stannard has finally called it a day. He has seen out no fewer than eight chairmen in this time, and this in a parish noted for the constancy of its council. Perhaps more amazing than anything else is that in all of this time, Ron has never missed a single council meeting! However, at a party to celebrate his 55th anniversary in the job in 2008 (read our report of it) he did reveal that this wasn't quite the achievement it might be seen as since, as clerk, he was always party to and usually led the process of determining the date of the next meeting!
Ron is a life-long resident of Nordelph and the village's unofficial but much respected archivist. This very website has drawn often on Ron's encyclopaedic collection of photographs of Nordelph and on his memories and knowledge of our community. The Parish Council chair, Andrew Marshall, is misquoted (in the on-line Eastern Daily Press) as saying "He is a mind (sic) of information and knows the village inside out". On reflection, perhaps that's not a misquote!
As well as accumulating historic photos, Ron is an active and enthusiastic photographer himself -- his own work is represented in these pages as well, although our policy of not crediting images means that you'll have to guess. One hint is that Ron still values black and white photography! We've never asked him what his favourite photograph is, but he speaks with affection of the candid shot he took of an astronaut that he bumped into when in the US!
On the subject of photographs, the two accompanying this item (showing the vagrants that pass for a council these days!) were taken for the EDP by their photographer Ian Burt. These (which didn't appear in print) are reproduced by kind permission of the Archant group; we should point out that they remain copyright and should not be downloaded and used for any other purpose.
Ron's position as clerk has been taken over by Kate Bennett.
Election time!
Following the elections on May 5th, Nordelph has a new parish council -- although you'll find that most of the members appear in the photograph of the previous parish council in the story above! As is common with Nordelph, there was no need for an election. The official result is shown below -- clicking on this will open a larger copy of the result. After the new council has met for the first time, and elected its chair and vice chair, we'll post the contact details on our Parish Council pages.
There was also an election for our Borough Council representatives, the results of which are summarised below:
Declaration of result for Upwell and Delph (2 Seats)
| Name of Candidate | Description | Votes |
| PARNELL, Roger | Labour Party | 351 |
| POPE, David John | Conservative Party | 854 |
| SKELTON, Edward | Labour Party | 321 |
| SPIKINGS, Vivienne Marie | Conservative Party | 980 |
David John Pope and Vivienne Marie Spikings are duly elected.
Is Welney Wash flooded?
In our last update, we introduced a page on flood warnings for Nordelph. Almost as an afterthought, we provided a couple of ways (telephone and the WWT website) of determining whether the Wash Road at Welney was passable or not. By courtesy of our neighbours at the Welney website (www.welney.org.uk) we have been able to add more information about a third and perhaps more directly useful way. The Environment Agency website publishes live water levels at Welney on their website. The data is attractively plotted:

This seems potentially so useful that we've added 'Is Welney flooded?' as well as a link to our 'Flood Warnings' page to the index frame of this section of the website. And the Welney website itself is very good on flooding (it matters rather more to them!) -- visit their page at: www.welney.org.uk/fens-rivers-washes/wash-road/flooding.htm.
Elsewhere in this update ...
There are two new pages in our digital photography section. One looks at the 'metadata' that is stored along with every digital photograph you take, and which can be accessed in a number of useful ways. The other explains how the image on the left can be processed to become the one on the right -- more than meets the eye.

You'll also find new reports of the Village Hall Committee. And although this update is being launched too early to contain the information from the start, as soon as the new Parish Council has met for the first time (May 16th) and elected its officers, we shall be revamping the Parish Council pages; we'll do this without waiting for the next full update, so check there around 23rd May to see if it's changed!
Royal wedding celebrations
For Royalists and Republicans alike, there was a celebration on the wedding day, April 29th in and around the Village Hall.

If you were there, you may find yourself pictured in our photo gallery. If you weren't, and want to see what you missed, go to the same place!
If you've found this page using a search engine, and canot see a pictorial heading above and an index panel to the left, then you've arrived at just one frame of a multi-frame page. Click here to reload the page as it should be seen.
