NORDELPH COMMUNITY WEBSITE: October 2009

This is one of our 'quick updates' -- we hadn't intended to load all of our nrew content until next month, but as you'll see on this page, there are some issues affecting the village. This page is the only new one, and the 'THIS MONTH' button will take you to the home page of our raft race edition with all the links there intact.

Here we go again -- 1

Remember the fuss and the head of steam raised in the village in 2007 when the Diocese of Ely applied (without any prior notice or consulatation) for planning permission to demolish the church and erect far too many houses on the site? If you want to be reminded, you can take a look at our summary of the first attempt. First attempt -- that's right, they've started again!

As with the previous attempt (which fairly self-evidently was defeated) there has been no notice and no consultation. But another planning application has been submitted. You can view the plans and the growing swell of objections by going to the Borough Council website: www.west-norfolk.gov.uk and navigating to the Planning section and the applications pages. If you search for 09/01453/F you'll find the details.

Meanwhile, there's an opportunity to see the printed plans in the Village Hall on Wednesday 14th October between 1.30 and 3.30 (in the bar area, as the Arts & Crafts Club will be meeting in the main hall). If you can't make this, but would still like to see the plans, contact Chris Manning on 01366 324129.

One especially point to note is that any objections you made back in 2007 will not be carried over to this application -- you'll have to go through it all again!

Here we go again -- 2

While you have the Borough Council planning pages open, look for 09/01519/LB. That's the latest attempt to desecrate Downham Market Station, this time by the erection of a footbridge. To clear the electric wires, this has to be so large that it will; dominate the station building and be visible from all viewpoints. More seriously, it will

necessarily have to be accompanied by the closure of the present facility to cross the track at ground level. While the operators have a legal duty to provide access for the disabled, that doesn't extend to those with cycles or push chairs.

It is worth noting that the total number of deaths at Downham Station caused by misuse of the crossing is currently zero. This is significantly less than the number of deaths on the road outside, which is not being considered for bridging.

What's happening in the Parish

You'll have seen the posters around the village advertising the meeting of the Safer Neighbourhoods Team on Thursday 22nd October at 7.00 in the Village Hall. This meeting rotates around the villages and seeks input on what concerns the locals; items from the wish lists are designated as priorities for the next period.

There's also a more directly Nordelph-focused meeting on November 17th from 7.00 until 8.00 in the Village Hall. This is a local 'surgery' conducted Police Community Support Officer Tracy Milburn, who is our 'Microbeat Officer'.

At this meeting, Tracy will

bring along information on various topics from bogus callers to shed security for people to take away or discuss.  She hopes this will be a bi-monthly opportunity for people to come and say hi to her, and/or bring any problems or concerns they may have.  Even if she can not answer them herself, she can probably sign post them to the relevant person/agency/organisation. If you'd like to spread the news, there's a poster that you can download and display.

And there will
be a New Year's party in the Village Hall. We'll be promoting it and giving full details of how to get tickets in our next update (after we've got Halloween out of the way!). But the headlines are -- tickets £12.50, food, grand draw included. Fancy dress if you dare, disco by Sonic Sounds.
