NORDELPH COMMUNITY WEBSITE: August 2009
This is one of our 'quick updates'; this is a fresh home page with the latest news on a number of community activities, but there is no other new material. The website as it was last month still exists and can be accessed by clicking above.

Tuesday 21st July saw the Nordelph Ladies team participating in the Cancer Research UK Race for Life. Still energetic after their exertions, the team has provided some photos and a description of their evening.
After a day of heavy showers, it was with some trepidation that we made our way to Houghton Hall on Tues. evening to take part in the Race for Life. However, the gods were with us and we enjoyed a fine, dry evening for our run/walk, probably because we went armed with umbrellas and a change of clothes! Nearly 3,000 ladies took part whilst our menfolk bemoaned the fact that there was no beer tent (just a hot chocolate stand) but found consolation in freshly made dough-nuts and hog roast burgers, whilst the ladies made their way around the 5km course.
Our duty done, and with our medals and goody bags collected, we made our way home to sort out the real reason for taking part in the Race for Life; to raise money for Cancer Research. To date between us, we have collected £600 with possibly more to come. We will let you know the final amount when we know it. In the meantime we would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who sponsored us and donated so generously. It really is appreciated. If you have the opportunity next year, do go along to the event as the atmosphere is marvellous and not to be missed.

We'd also like to comment (very approvingly) on the fact that, as far as we're aware, every single one of the posters advertising the run has been removed from Nordelph. The Stradsett Hall Gardens Show was on July 4th, but the advert is still clamped to the bridge; and it's been 'grass karting today' for around four weeks now! Well done Nordelph Ladies!
Raft Race 2009
We'll be covering this event on Sunday 16th August (punt off 2.30) but now is an excellent time to remind you to get your entry in if you haven't already done so. Entries close on August 10th. The full rules and an entry form can be downloaded from this website or collected from Andrew or Christine at Mill House in Birchfield Road (01366 324488). There's been a lot of interest, with around half-a-dozen entries to date, which suggests that the race has been missed since it was last held in 2006. Either that or the innovation of having rules (no one can remember ever needing these before) has spurred people to creativity. Remember that the raft only has to stay in one piece for long enough to get from the Village Hall to the bridge (historically, most rafts don't)!
The day will also be a 'fun day' with refreshments, a raffle, a bar, a table-top sale, children's fancy dress and more. Coming along for the afternoon will be an excellent opportunity to assess the organisers' optimism in scheduling the raft race prize giving for 3.00 -- on past form, few of the rafts will be ready to start by then!
Remember that any proceeds from the day go to the Air Ambulance and the RNLI. So do come prepared to enjoy yourself. And if you don't know where we are, make sure that you read the next item before setting out!
Google gets it wrong again!
Back in our April edition we drew attention to the erroneous map offered by Google Maps that suggested a second bridge across Well Creek in the place where the previous bridge had long since been demolished. This quite simple story sent us off in all sorts of directions and led us to study 180-year old watercolours of Norfolk bridges stored in the Norwich Castle museum.
We've taken another look at Google Maps this month, and the results are even more horrifying. You probably have some sense of just where Nordelph is? Wrong -- at least according to Google. It's moved a couple of miles down Silt Road and into the middle of a field:
But it's moved in a more dramatic sense as well: move your mouse across the map above: this is what would pop up if you clicked on the 'Nordelph' marker (the image isn't live, so it won't accept clicks) -- welcome to Cambridgeshire! Sorry, by the way, that we couldn't get the images to marry up perfectly so that there's a slight shift as you move your mouse over.
In general, we advise that you don't trust either Google Maps or their added content. Here's another example, this time putting Nordelph just outside Peterborough city centre!
You can explore this nightmare world for yourself: go to www.google.co.uk, select 'Maps' from the bar at the top of the page and search for 'Nordelph' -- or anywhere else that takes your fancy. Who knows? You may find it!
And finally ...
Now that we've been nasty to Google, let's have a go at people who live in neighbouring counties. The following sign was spotted in the Cotswold Outdoor store in Norwich.

We'll be back with a photo selection and report on the fun day and raft race as soon as possible after the 16th August.
