NORDELPH COMMUNITY WEBSITE: September 2007

There is little news on the church front, and what there is is reported below. We're keeping our 'remove the church' header for at least one more month!

Church development

The consultation period for the planning application is now well closed, and we're delighted that a substantial number of residents made their feelings strongly felt. As we have said before, we would be delighted to offer space to anyone who wished to argue in support of the application, but to date we haven't met any such person!

As we also reported before, our Councillor, Mrs Spikings, who is also chair of the committee that will make the final decision, assured us that there was no question of decisions being taken out of committee as can happen with simpler non-controversial applications, and that she had already taken steps to call this application in before the full committee. She later reported that it would not be on the agenda for the September meeting, so it will be a month at least before the next step in the saga.

We also put two matters to the Diocese of Ely, in the form of Archdeacon Hugh McCurdy who had previously liaised with Nordelph. We asked him about the date on which the plans were drawn up (before liaison began) and what substance there was in the allegation that the plans were designed to fail (to make a subsequent application more likely to succeed). Although our e-mail was read on August 13th, we have still had no response from the Diocese. But then, the press found no-one available to comment either!
.

You can read our coverage and summary of the plans by clicking on the previous link, and our follow-up on last month's home page by clicking here. And finally, however reticent Archdeacon McCurdy may be when faced with a website, he cannot be accused of hiding away. As this month's church services reveal, he will be officiating at the 9.15 service in Nordelph on September 16th!

Change of address

E-mail address that is! Ever since this website was launched, in the pre-historic days of 2004, we have invited you to contact us on nordelph@mathmedia.co.uk. This has always seemed to be an anachronism -- given that the website is at www.nordelph.org, why shouldn't you e-mail it at, say, info@nordelph.org? Well, from now, you can! With luck, we have managed to adjust every single reference to the address in all of our pages (86, we think), but if we missed one (a) the old one still works, and (b) we'd like to know about it -- at info@nordelph.org of course!

Nordelph re-united

Several times in the past we have commented at how pleasing it is as a webmaster to receive a message from someone with links in Nordelph. This past month is no exception. We heard from Janet and Colin Hales, who now live in Hampshire:
"We visited our grandparents' graves last week and we would like to thank whoever cuts the grass and keeps the cemetery so tidy.
My grandparents were William and Elizabeth George and I was born at their home in Thorpe Terrace, Silt Road .My husband is the grandson of Tom and Lizzy Hales, they lived at Pear Tree Cottage opposite the chapel.Colin was born at Salters Lode and is the son of Eric and Madge Hales.
It was lovely to visit and memories came flooding back of happy times with our families.
I went to Nordelph school and remember being taught by Miss Turner who became Mrs Foreman and Mrs Thrower. Colin went to Salters Lode school
In those days there were four shops as well as van deliveries,my Gran had most things delivered to the door.Grandad was a special constable and I have his whistle and badges.
We enjoyed our visit and were sad to see the church in it,s sorry state.Maybe some of you remember us?
I can remember John Wilson and his parents Eva and Sam and sister Christine."

As always, we do not publish addresses or e-mails on the website, but we'll be happy to put anyone in touch with the Hales -- just e-mail us at info@nordelph.org!

And finally ...

We had planned on a much fuller update this month, to mark what is (for parents of schoolchildren at least) something akin to a New Year! But it was not to be. We were to regale you with things you didn't know about courgettes, but we inadvertently deleted the photos, without which the main points would have been lost. We were going to offer you courgette recipes, but that seemed pointless now. And on recipes, we were going to share the story of what must be the rarest dish of all -- asparagus and samphire soup -- because the ingredients are probably in season together for about a week! But we tried that out (all our recipes have been Nordelph-tested before we release them on you) and it was awful! We found a replacement in crab meat and samphire soup, but there we ran out of time! And it is the same lack of time that has prevented us from bringing you a feature article called 'Are we there yet?' on games to play in the car.

But we do have one other item for you. Another rant -- this time about changing telephone service providers. As this properly belongs in our Nordelph Future section, that's where you'll find it -- or just use our 'This Month' button.

Back in October!
