NORDELPH COMMUNITY WEBSITE: MARCH 2006

New to the Nordelph website? Use this link to find out how the site is arranged and where to find what you're looking for. Want to know when it's worth looking at the site? We update the site approximately every month, and will send you a short e-mail telling you that it's happened if you contact us on info@nordelph.org

Let's start this update with something seasonal:

Frozen, snow-covered Well Creek

There was just a moment during the first days of March when Well Creek, frozen all day after nights that had fallen to -6°C, held a light dusting of snow while the sky cleared to sunshine. It's almost a candidate for inclusion in our favourite images section -- to which we've added a tenth image in this update.

But it was also taken from this viewpoint because of the resonance with the two following images, taken only the evening before:

Accident on the Downham RoadAccident

Yet another road traffic incident on the road from Nordelph to Downham, this time one that blocked the road, necessitating the police presence diverting drivers. As we underlined very strongly in our last update (refresh your memory via the back numbers index if you missed it) the Parish Council is very worried indeed about the state of road safety. This will be one of the major items on the agenda at the annual Parish Assembly, which will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday 15th March at 7.00pm. This is your chance to make your voice heard, particularly as we will be joined by representatives of the Borough Council who want to hear what you think and feel. Remember that Broadband users can download the Council's Road Safety Report while those with slower dial-up access are directed to the brief summary.

The next New Year's Eve

We've had another message through our popular contact us form:

I have lived in Nordelph all my life (apart from 2 years). I can remember when the village pub had so many people in, getting to the loo was a major task. I miss those times as I am sure many others do too.

I would like to know if the people of Nordelph would be interested in a New Years Eve party 2006. If the interest is there I would hopfully with the help of others be very keen to organize something. One thing I would like to say is it would be adults only!

Popham's Eau Nature Site

The afternoon (1.00 -- 4.00) of Saturday March 11th is a day when you can make a bit of difference to the village. You're asked to come along and help to conserve the riverside woodland by Coronation Avenue. The tasks include cutting and removing excess elder, building habitat stacks and some general rubbish and litter picking. Meet at the bottom of Coronation Avenue and please wear clothing suitable for outdoor activities, together with strong shoes or boots. From a safety point of view, children must be accompanied and supervised by parents. All the necessary tools, training and supervision will be provided by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers. If you want further information, you can contact Jackie Squires on 01553 616657 (office hours).

And you may recall that we featured a report from Jackie way back in the first incarnation of this website -- and it's still there. Click on the link above and enjoy being reminded of what the website looked like a year ago!

Volunteering

In the spirit of voluntary work, we've been asked to draw your attention to West Norfolk Voluntary and Community Action. This is a voluntary organisation set up and owned by local groups to support, promote and develop local voluntary and community action. They provide assistance with funding, training, developing policies etc. They also have a volunteer centre which helps match volunteers with organisations across West Norfolk.

You can find out more at their website: www.westnorfolkvca.org.

Nordelph Arts & Crafts Club

There's another illustrated report on the doings of the Club, from Suzie Venn. We sometimes tease you into visiting a page by showing you a thumbnail image of the photographs, but that would give too much away this time. If you want to learn about 'character knitting' or making reed love hearts -- go to the NACC page!

And finally ...

There are the regular updates to the church services and to the 'vegetable of the month', which this month is yet another of those with exotic foreign-sounding names that are actually grown locally -- it's mooli.

And you may know that the Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve will be closed from March 27th until April 23rd, for the move into their purpose-built Visitor Centre. To mark the occasion, we've added two new pages to our picture galleries: one on the works at Welney and another page of swans. Which is where we'll end this page:
