Welcome to the Nordelph Community website

We are experiencing difficulty in displaying this page using the Firefox Internet browser -- we're working on it and will remove this warning if we identify the problem. All the information is there, but laid out rather strangely. Even if Firefox is your browser of choice, you may prefer to view this update in Internet Explorer. Sorry.

In our last update, we drew your attention to the Forestry Commission's 'Colours of Autumn' website at www.forestry.gov.uk/autumn. This monitored the colour changes in the trees in the various forests managed by the Commission. The monitoring period is now over, but the website has become perhaps more fascinating! The map that previously showed the state of the trees on a daily basis has been converted into a simple animation that steps through each day of the Autumn, so that you can watch the progress unfold before your eyes -- all of which reveals that Thetford Forest didn't turn green before they stopped looking!

There seemed to be some confusion about the various announcements last month that EDF were cutting off electricity supplies so that they could carry out tree trimming where branches had grown dangerously close to power lines.

Residents received a number of statutory warnings of supply interruption, some of which came to nothing. However, it wasn't all a false alarm, and the photograph alongside is our evidence that the trees were managed after all!

When we began our Vegetable of the Month series by appointing our Fruit & Vegetable Correspondent, we imagined that we would be taking an in-depth look at some familiar Fen favourites -- explaining to the outside world just why it is that dirty carrots and parsnips attract a premium at market.

We weren't really prepared for the fact that in the first four months of this feature, we'd personally never heard of half of the featured vegetables!

That trend continues with this month's entrant, the 'Miss December' of the vegetable world.

We really want to build a sense of mystery about this newcomer, so unless you're more knowledgeable than we are, you need to click on the photograph to find out what it is that you're looking at!

Elsewhere in this update, there's another addition to our Trade Directory of locally-based small businesses that you may find useful -- with the predictions of a hard winter, you may find a heating and plumbing engineer a useful number to have to hand.

We have felt for a while that we're a mite too serious in this website, so we've added something with a lighter touch. Responding to the challenge that our 'strap line' 'a small corner of paradise ...' is a little over-blown for such a small community, we have reprinted the lastest effusion from the (not entirely truthful) Nordelph Tourist Board. You can also access this through the 'Why live here?' index entry.

Ever wondered why, in these days of 'chip and PIN', using your credit card at Downham Market railway station still involves a good old-fashioned signature? Well, that's because the booking office window is too small to pass the keypad through! But all that's set to change in the near future when the office is refurbished with new 'credit compliant' windows.

Finally -- before wishing you a merry Christmas and signing off until the New Year -- Nordelph has been Broadband enabled since October, so some of you out there will have signed up for a better service. How are you getting on? Please let us know at the usual address: info@nordelph.org so that we can share experiences, tips and bargains.
