Autumn is here

There was a Parish Council meeting on October 19th. As always, we have added a report of this meeting, and the minutes of the previous meeting to our pages. October's meeting might well be of special interest: the Council was addressed by the Area Commander of the Norfolk Police Force. You may feel that any crime is too much crime, but you should be heartened by what he had to say about the levels of annoyance in the Nordelph area.

As we do every month, we've updated the church services and readings page. This time, there's an important item of additional information. Remembrance Sunday is approaching, and with it the traditional reading of the roll of honour. But this year, the qualifications for inclusion in the roll have been modified -- principally to allow for the 'presence' of civilians. The details are described on the church page linked above.

We are always delighted when someone with memories of Nordelph finds us on the web. It happened again this month, with a contribution from Wales: in fact, two contribtions! On our page of Nordelph People in our 'photographs of old Nordelph' in the 'Nordelph Past' section, we asked if anyone could identify the people in the two photographs. Well, now one has been, and we've updated the page. But there's also another pen sketch of life in Nordelph, just after the 2nd World War. It's an addition to our 'remembered village' pages.

We've also added some more recipes to our 'Fen Food' section. A personal favourite, and very timely just now, is the roast partridge with juniper berries pictured on the left. And the humble tomato soup is broght up-to-date with roast tomato and pepper soup.

And in case you haven't noticed, it's Halloween again, so our 'vegetable of the month' is -- what else? -- pumpkin.

Available for download is a poster used to advertise recent networking events aimed at community groups in the Fens area.  The second meeting, held at Tilney St Lawrence was very well attended and there will be another meeting in the Three Holes/Upwell/Welney area.  This time Vicki Howling, Fens Leader+ Project Officer (07981 642171) would like to consult with groups in the area on the most suitable time & venue for the meeting.  The meeting is likely to be w/c 21st November. If you are involved with, or know any groups in the area mentioned above that might be interested in attending this kind of meeting please do get in touch with Vicki  and/or pass on this information.

Construction of the new lottery-funded Visitors' Centre at the Welney Wetlands centre is proceeding apace -- watching it is almost as much fun as bird watching! Meanwhile, the first whooper swans from Iceland have arrived and are very visible. Some Bewick's swans from Northern Russia are also reported, but we haven't seen any yet. Full details of opening times and swan feeds are available on this website.

Finally, November 1st brings Diwali, the Hindu festival of light. November 3rd brings the EDF festival of dark! Between 1130 and 1400 on Thursday November 3rd, EDF Energy will be cutting the supply to parts of Nordelph in order to carry out some tree surgery on growth that's dangerously close to power lines. Affected houses should have received a notice of this, together with common-sense measures about what to do with your freezer, but if you're concerned, call Martin Bloom on 01449 720330, quoting reference MB425.

'Autumn is here' might seem like a rather bland statement indicating that we've run out of captivating headlines to introduce new updates of the website.

In fact, it's intended to introduce one of the more intriguing and delightful websites that we've discovered recently.

The Forestry Commission are maintaining a site that records the progress of the Autumn colours as the trees change. Go to: www.forestry.gov.uk/autumn to discover the latest state of play.

On October 29th, the passage of Autumn was as shown in the map alongside -- this map is just a snapshot, but the live website updates this regularly. Our nearest Forestry Commission property is Thetford Forest, whose leaves were still green at the time this snapshot was taken. You can go directly to the Thetford page by clicking this link.

Elsewhere in this update, you'll find additions to our picture galleries. In mid-October, Well Creek was scoured by an intriguing flotilla of water-borne JCBs. See what they looked like, and discover what the cuddly toy is about, by clicking above.
And while we were adding to our galleries, we re-instated some pictures that never got transferred from the previous version of the site to this one: even more pictures of tree surgery by the creek.
